Day 239 – 580EXII With A Side Of Rice

Somewhere buried in there is a Canon 580EXII flash.

To cut a long story short, I dropped it while out light paining and of course it landed in a puddle of water. My first thought was that being weather sealed, it would be fine…. of course when it was picked up it was not in one piece. 😦

The flash was already off, so the batteries were immediately removed. As soon as possible, it was placed in a sealed container submerged in rice and I left for about 36 hours to simmer. I had heard of this technique being used to dry out phones that had taken a swim, and was told to give it a try.

Upon removal it was a little dusty from the rice.

Once cleaned, a new set of batteries were installed… and I held my breath – Success! Awesome. 😀

  1. WOW! What a story! Thanks for sharing. Those 580EX’s are pretty tough it has to be said. So inspired by this, I’ve posted it to my local photography club’s Facebook page for members to see. If you want the link for reference, let me know.
